Our pick of the ten best events this January:
Great Christmas Circus
- Date: 1st to 5th January
- Venue: Festplatz am Ratsweg
Just because Christmas is over doesn’t mean all the decorations have to come down just yet. It’s the last week of the Great Christmas Circus (Circus Carl Busch) for this season, and anyone attending can expect to be dazzled by the acrobats, and either entertained or scared by the clowns (for those who have coulrophobia – a fear of clowns).
Full information on the website Circus Carl Busch here.
Bodyguard (The Musical)
- Date: 1st to 11th January
- Venue: Alte Oper
The smash-hit musical based on the Oscar-nominated Whitney Houston movie starts the year with a two-week residency at Alte Oper. Fun fact for movie fans – even though I Will Always Love You is the big hit from the movie, because it’s a cover song, it wasn’t nominated for best song at the Oscars (can you guess the two songs there were?)
This is the first time the show is touring in Germany. Tickets can be purchased on the official website here.
Winter Lights at the Palm Garden
- Date: 1st to 19th January
- Venue: Messe Frankfurt
We’ve mentioned how the early nights here in the city make it wondrous for an evening stroll, and there’s no better place to go for one than the Palm Garden when the winter lights are still on display.
All over the park, you’ll find installations and decorations that light up the area. It’s only open from 5 pm to 9 pm daily, and you can get more information in English from the Palm Garden website here.
- Date: 1st to 31st January
- Venue: The English Theatre
A fun fact for theatre fans out there; The English Theatre in town is the largest English speaking theatre in continental Europe, and this performance of Sweeney Todd just so happens to be smack bang in the middle of the 40th-anniversary programme.
It’s running all month long and a little into February too. Full ticket information is available from the English Theatre website.
Frankfurt Lions Vs Bayreuth Tigers
- Date: 3rd January
- Venue: Eissporthalle Frankfurt
It may be early in the year, but this game will be the last of the season at home for the Frankfurt Lions.
Not many people know the city has an ice hockey team, and their home games have a great family-friendly atmosphere.
Holiday on Ice: Supernova
- Date: 7th to 13th January
- Venue: Festhalle Frankfurt
A sort of a “you have to be there to get it” kind of show, Holiday on Ice is back in town as part of a whirlwind tour around the country for their Supernova tour.
The plot of the show is about people going on a journey from earth to a faraway galaxy, but it’s best to think of it as a really good ice skating show without getting bogged down in the details.
Ticket info available from the Holiday on Ice website.
The Best Of Ennio Morricone
- Date: 9th January
- Venue: Jahrhunderhalle FrankfurtHöchst
Movie music fans are going to love this one night only live show being performed by a live orchestra. Although the maestro himself won't be there, the show takes highlights from his 500 film score credits.
Music is performed live while some of the most famous scenes from films like Django Unchained, Once Upon a Time in the West and A Fistful of Dollars are projected behind the orchestra.
Full ticket information is available on the Highlight Concert website.
- Date: 24th to 28th January
- Venue: Messe Frankfurt
We’ve only just taken the decorations down, and already some people are planning what’s going to go up in December 2020.
Christmasworld is a massive B2B trade fair bringing businesses and retailers from across the globe all in one room at the very start of the year to figure out what decoration trends are going to be up in-store 11 months from now.
Exhibitors come from over 45 countries to give an idea of just how big the show is. More information and tickets available on the Messe Frankfurt website here.
Game of Thrones - The Concert Show
- Date: 24th January
- Venue: Jahrhunderhalle Frankfurt Höchst
No matter what your thoughts are on the last season of the show are (and fans all have the things we loved and hated) there’s no denying that Game of Thrones had some incredible music.
Overlook the last few episodes and celebrate everything that came before with this live show featuring musical highlights from all seven seasons.
- Date: 29th January
- Venue: Festhalle
Making sure things kick up a gear as we head towards the end of the month, American metal band Slipknot are back in town for what promises to be one of the hottest tickets in town this month.
Their recent sixth album We Are not Your Kind peaked at No.2 in the album charts, and this show promises to be a loud one.
