Some of the best events in Frankfurt in December 2019

It’s time to wrap up warm and get very festive when coming to Frankfurt in December. Even though the average temperature gets quite low, you’ll be feeling cheery and warm with all the Christmas markets and special events taking place this month.

For anyone staying with us at Capri By Fraser Frankfurt in December, or someone just looking for things to do, here are some of the festive Christmas market highlights in the city as well as some of the top events taking place across Frankfurt this December.

    Christmas Markets in Frankfurt:

    • Date: throughout December
    • Venue: throughout the city

There’s nothing quite like those December evenings in Frankfurt. The sun has set early, and the streets are lined with Christmas lights. Several markets take up residency at prime points in the city, with each having something unique to offer.

The most popular would be the aptly titled Frankfurter Weihnachtsmarkt (Frankfurt Christmas Market) which has a path coursing through Hauptwache all the way down the river bank. It’s open from 10 am – 9 pm daily (11 am on Sundays).

If it’s your first time here, there are certain items to look out for such as Bethmännchen cookies (one to avoid if you don’t like marzipan) and local mulled wine or cider. There are other Christmas markets further out of town like Wiesbaden and Aschaffenburg. They’re exactly what you’d imagine a little town market to be like, but if you’re only in Frankfurt for a few days it is best to stick with the main markets.

For anyone coming to Frankfurt in December, you’ll want to know what there is to do. Here are our picks of the best events to take time out for.

    Night of the Proms

    • Date: 4th & 5th December

Much like the BBC Proms in the UK, the German proms have a long programme full of incredible classical performances.

This year sees two very special shows taking place at the Festhalle as the Antwerp Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing as backup for a unique line-up that includes Alan Parsons, Al McKay's Earth, Wind & Fire Experience and John Miles.

It’s a clash of musical styles in the best way possible.

    The Dublin Legends

    • Date: 6th  December

For a few hours on the first Friday of the month, the Klub at Jahrhunderthalle is turning into something of an Irish pub when The Dublin Legends take to the stage.

The legendary folk band will run through the back catalogue of Irish songs including The Irish Rover and Whisky In The Jar. We can’t promise the club will be serving Guinness, but you’ll undoubtedly feel like you’ve transported to Dublin when the crowd gets going.

    Eintracht Frankfurt vs Vitória SC

    • Date: 12th December
    • Venue: Commerzbank Arena

The last big Europa League game in the calendar before Christmas, Eintracht Frankfurt will be looking to head towards Christmas with a win over Vitoria SC. If you’ve never been to an Eintracht game before, the atmosphere on a night like this is something else – a must for any footy fan.

    International Horse Show

    The chiming of the Bells

    • Date: 24th  December

A lovely tradition that takes place right across the city. Around 5 pm is when most businesses and such will close up for Christmas and that’s when ten different churches throughout town will take turns ringing their bells.

St Paul’s Church is always first before other churches take over. The last church to ring its bells is always the cathedral.

    Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical Gala

    • Date: 31st  December
    • Venue: Jahrhunderthalle
