One of two botanical gardens in Frankfurt, Palmengarten can be easily located from the city centre in the Westend-Süd district, covering 22 hectares. It originally opened in March 1871 after being designed and financed by Heinrich Siesmayer. Meaning ‘palm garden’ in the German language, the park encompasses magnificent gardens, flora and fauna from around the world, an exotic greenhouse, a pretty lake and retail outlets to enjoy. The benefit of having such a wonderful outdoor space within walking distance of your luxury serviced apartment is that you can visit at any time of year and still be able to appreciate the curated and outstanding botanical gardens.

If you are not a fan of nature, many can still enjoy the beautifully curated gardens – it can be a leisurely educational experience teamed with enjoying one of the best attractions in Frankfurt. Most informational placards are in the German language so it may be worth doing some research on the official website to learn some more in your own language.
Palmengarten itself has a unique and colourful history from its opening. American entertainer Buffalo Bill brought a Western show to the venue in 1890 and after World War 2 it was transferred to American occupation later returning to the city’s hands in the 1960s. A major reconstruction then took place restructuring halls that were damaged in the war.
A great day out for all the family
If you’re visiting with children, a fun attraction within the gardens is the Palmen-Express, a special electric train that will take you on a tour around the park, conveniently stopping off at some of the children’s playgrounds along the way. The train operates during the summer months from April to October. It is important to note that there are admission charges to get in to Palmengarten. The average price for an adult is €7 and for a child (up to the age of 13) the cost is around €2. The gardens are open from 9am -6pm during February to October and from 9am-4pm during November to January.
