Uncover the history of the Museum
Named after the banker and merchant Johann Friedrich Städel who also founded the venue, it was established as a civic foundation in 1815, which it remains as today. A new building for the museum was designed and constructed using the Grunderzeit style in 1878. Much excitement surrounded the German collections of Pan-European art by the start of the twentieth century.
With a rich historical past one of the most notable periods in the history of the museum was in 1937 when many of the museum’s paintings and prints were confiscated after being classified as degenerate art.
It displays the complete collections resulting from a survey of 700 years of European art dating as far back as the fourteenth century. Flairs of the Renaissance, early Modern art, the Baroque period and more are presented from artists such as Botticelli, Rembrandt, Monet, Picasso and more. Their works encompasses thousands of pieces of art in an outstanding collection that would rival other world leading museums.
Three floors make up the full collection - note that the largest assortment of prints and drawings is not on permanent display and occupies the first floor of the museum. Many events and exhibitions take place throughout the year – find out what’s on when you are in the city to add an extra experience to your visit. You can also arrange to view works on paper that are not on public display by appointment – refer to the official website if you wish to do this.
Nowadays, the Städel has European paintings from seven centuries, beginning with the early 14th century, moving into the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.
A modern museum
The modern age of digital and technology is becoming involved in the visitor experience at Stadel – a major digital expansion marking its 200-year anniversary was launched in 2015. Included in this is free Wi-Fi access to visitors, an exhibition ‘digitorial’, new app, audio guides and other educational online facilities.
